RS Controls was appointed to design and deliver a complete integrated technology installation for this substantial private residence in Oxshott, Surrey, working from first-fix stage through to final commissioning.
The Brief
The client required a whole-home technology installation that would sit cleanly within a high-specification interior without drawing attention to itself. The brief covered structured cabling, architectural lighting, multi-room audio,home cinema, audio-visual, smart-home automation and the full technology fit-out of an indoor swimming pool and spa building, including motorised pool covers. All systems were to be coordinated from the earliest stage of the build, ensuring that nothing would need to be retrofitted or compromised by decisions made after the structure was in place.
Oxshott is one of Surrey’s most sought-after residential addresses, known for its substantial private residences set within generous plots and easy access to London via Oxshott and Esher stations. The property is a large detached house set within its own grounds, with principal living spaces, extensive circulation areas, a dedicated leisure wing and the separately constructed indoor pool and spa building.
The project covered the full sequence of a major residential refurbishment: first fix, second fix, commissioning and final finish inspections. RS Controls’ involvement from the first-fix stage meant that every technology decision was made before ceilings were boarded, cable routes were clear and no system was constrained by what had already been built around it.
Smart Audio Visual
A bespoke media wall finished in dark timber and marble-effect surfaces. A large-format television is mounted on a full-motion articulated bracket, giving convenient access for servicing while maintaining the clean line of the joinery from the front. A concealed recessed enclosure behind the display houses local distribution equipment and connections for entertainment sources including gaming systems and amplification hardware. HDMI-over-Cat technology distributes high-quality video and control signals through the structured cabling network, keeping equipment and visible wiring out of the finished rooms.
Home Cinema
The Oxshott cinema room transforms a challenging loft space with a sloped apex ceiling into a fully integrated, high-performance entertainment environment. Four parallel LED strips follow the roof pitch and form the foundation of a lighting scheme planned before construction, with scene-controlled colours for pre-film, cinema, interval and post-screening modes. Flush acoustic panels are built into the walls for a discreet finish and improved low-frequency performance, while the ceiling-mounted projection system, speaker positions, tiered platform and multiple rows of leather recliners were all designed around the room’s geometry to preserve accurate image alignment, full audio coverage and clear rear-row sightlines. Integrated with the wider RS Controls smart home system, a single command starts the projection, adjusts the lighting, activates seating illumination and prepares the entire room for use.
Lighting Control
Lighting was designed as an architectural feature across the whole property rather than as a utility. Recessed downlights, perimeter LED cove lighting, feature illumination and discreet low-level lighting were coordinated across the kitchen, principal living areas, circulation spaces and leisure facilities. The layered approach means each room can support different uses throughout the day, from bright and task-focused in the morning to warm and atmospheric in the evening, from a single control point. The consistent visual character of the lighting across the property was maintained regardless of the function of each space.
Indoor Swimming Pool and Spa Building
RS Controls designed and fitted out the indoor pool and spa building as a complete technology environment. Architectural lighting was specified for the pool hall, with illumination designed to deliver a calm, spa-like atmosphere during everyday use and the ability to shift character when the space is used for entertaining. In-ceiling audio extends into the pool building, with the speakers and equipment specified for the moisture and temperature conditions of the environment.
The motorised pool cover system was designed and installed by RS Controls. The covers operate on a track system concealed within the pool surround, with motorised drives allowing the pool to be opened or closed from a single control point. The system integrates with the wider smart-home installation so that the pool cover can be operated as part of a scene, for example, closing automatically at a set time in the evening or opening in response to a manual command from inside the house.
Climate Control
The home’s lighting, audio, AV and building services are managed from an integrated control system, accessible from wall-mounted touchpanels and from smartphones and tablets throughout the property. Scenes can be set for different times of day, different rooms and different activities, with the system managing transitions automatically where programmed to do so.
Data Network
A comprehensive structured cabling network was installed throughout the property, routing data, audio-visual and control connections back to a dedicated central communications area. The completed rack contains organised network patching, distribution hardware, control equipment and protected power infrastructure. Every cable run is labelled, terminated and documented, creating a reliable foundation that can be extended or modified without disturbing the rest of the system.
The Final Result
The completed installation is a discreet, high-performance residential system in which lighting, audio, video, networking and selected building services have been considered as one coordinated project. Technology is kept largely out of sight throughout the property. What the client sees is the room, the view and the atmosphere. What RS Controls put in is the infrastructure that makes all of it work, consistently and without intervention, every day.
